You can find small, two-part moka pots in almost every home in Italy; the coffee you get with the easy-to-use moka pot is full-bodied and rich in aroma. Invented in Italy in the 1930s, the moka pot consists of a cylinder (bottom chamber), a funnel-shaped filter, a top chamber where the coffee collects, and a second, removable filter attached to the bottom of the top chamber via a gasket.
How Does the Moka Pot System Brew Coffee?
The water heated in the lower chamber rises with 2 atmospheres of steam pressure, passes through the ground coffee in the filter, and collects as liquid coffee in the upper chamber. You can watch the video explaining the working system of the moka pot below.
How to Make Coffee with a Moka Pot?

- First, twist and open the moka pot by holding the bottom and top chambers. Separate the filter from the bottom chamber.
-
Fill the bottom chamber with drinking water up to the lowest point of the valve on the chamber's surface.
- Fill the funnel-shaped filter to the brim with ground coffee loosely, without pressing it down. Tap the outside with a spoon to settle the coffee. Scrape off excess coffee with the flat side of the spoon.
- Place the funnel-shaped filter on top of the bottom chamber you filled with water.
- After ensuring that the gasket and filter in the upper chamber are properly installed, tightly twist the two chambers together; do not force the handle on the upper chamber to tighten and then open it.
-
Place the moka pot on the smallest burner of your stove, lit on low heat.
- Keeping the lid of the upper chamber open will help you catch the moment the coffee starts to emerge.
-
Remove your pot from the stove just before your coffee starts to form air bubbles as it comes out of the column in the upper chamber; this way, you will get the best parts of the coffee.
- After waiting a short time, you can stir your coffee with a spoon and pour it into a cup to serve.
How to Clean a Moka Pot?
Moka pots are mostly made of aluminum. Coffee brewing equipment made from aluminum should never come into contact with materials such as soap, detergent, or sponges. You should only clean this equipment by scrubbing or rinsing it with hot water by hand. Otherwise, the aluminum material may react and turn into a material that can threaten your health.
- Cleaning your moka pot as soon as you use it will make your job easier by not allowing residual coffee and water to dry and stain. To do this, hold the hot pot under cold water until it reaches a temperature you can comfortably handle.
- Separate the moka pot (bottom chamber, filter, and top chamber) from each other.
- Clean your pot, which is made of cast aluminum, by rinsing it only in lukewarm water.
- Dry the washed parts and put them back in your cabinet until the next use.
