Ristretto is a coffee that can be preferred by those who want to experience a more intense coffee taste. Although the same amount of coffee is used, it has a lower caffeine content compared to Espresso because less water passes through the ground coffee. It has a stronger aroma and can be drunk in a single sip.

 

HOW TO MAKE RISTRETTO?

To prepare Ristretto, 15 ml of beverage should be obtained from 7g of coffee powder, ground finer than for Espresso, by allowing 90°C hot water to flow through it at 9 bar (atmosphere) pressure for 7-11 seconds.

Ingredients:

For 15 ml of Ristretto

- 7g coffee (coffee powder ground finer than for espresso)

- Drinking water

Making Ristretto with an Espresso Machine:

  1. Place 7g of coffee (maximum 7.5g), ground finer than the coffee powder suitable for espresso, into the basket of the portafilter.
  2. Rest the tip of the portafilter on the table, then tamp the coffee by applying 20kg pressure with a tamping tool, pressing down and rotating a quarter turn.
  3. Attach the portafilter to the machine and run hot water for 7-11 seconds until 15ml of coffee is obtained.

 

HOW TO MAKE RISTRETTO WITH CAPSULE MACHINES?

You can make Ristretto using Francis Francis or some Hotpoint brand machines with iperespresso capsule varieties; with some Mitaca brand machines using illy MPS medium roast capsules; and with ESE Pod compatible machines using illy E.S.E. Pod varieties, by setting the machine's water flow to dispense 15ml of coffee.
